The Mummy Returns
THE MUMMY RETURNS is set in 1935, 10 years after the events of the first film. Rick O'Connell (Fraser) is now married to Evelyn (Weisz), and the couple have settled in London, where they are raising their 9-year-old son Alex (played by screen newcomer Freddie Boath). When a chain of events finds the corpse of Imhotep (Vosloo) resurrected in the British Museum, the mummy Imhotep walks the earth once more, determined to fulfill his quest for immortality. But another force has also been set loose in the world...one born of the darkest rituals of ancient Egyptian mysticism, and even more powerful than Imhotep. When these two forces clash, the fate of the world will hang in the balance, sending the O'Connells on a desperate race to save the world from unspeakable evil, and rescue their son before it is too late. Stop-Loss
Director Kimberly Peirce (BOYS DON'T CRY) tackles another controversial topic with STOP-LOSS, the story of a U.S. soldier forced back into battle. Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe) has just returned to Texas after a harrowing final tour in Iraq. He's accompanied by the remaining men from his unit, all of whom are more than a little shell-shocked. Welcomed home as a hero, Brandon is awarded a Purple Heart by a visiting state senator. But the homecoming quickly turns sour, as each of the soldiers struggles to assimilate back into society. Tommy (Joseph Gordon Levitt) can't lay off the booze, and Steve (Channing Tatum) roughs up his fiancée. Brandon is eager to put the war behind him, but that dream quickly fizzles when he learns that he has been "stop-lossed," or ordered back for another, involuntary tour of duty. Stunned by the news, he goes AWOL and forms a plan to get help from the senator who so recently honored him. He hits the road for D.C., all the while trying to cope with PTSD and battle flashbacks. Torn between his fierce patriotism and what he believes to be outright betrayal by the U.S. Army, he doesn't know where to turn or what to do. He is ultimately faced with the harshest of choices: Iraq, or a life in exile.

There are now dozens of films that grapple with the war in Iraq, but STOP-LOSS is unique in its attempt to reach out to a younger audience. Produced by MTV, the film features a striking young cast and a thumping hip-hop soundtrack. There are many commendable performances, most notably from Phillippe and Levitt. Despite the occasional melodrama of some of the scenes, Peirce pulls no punches, and really hammers home the tragic exploitation of American troops. (1 hr. 52 min.) [Movie Page]

The Ruins
Author Scott Smith adapts his own popular 2006 novel in this unsettling and surprising horror yarn. In its first half hour, THE RUINS seems to be cut from the same "body-count-of-young-Americans-abroad" cloth as HOSTEL and TURISTAS, but the film has a supernatural element not present in either of those works, keeping it clear of the overpopulated slasher and torture genres. A talented young cast also ensures that Smith's tale reaches the screen with plenty of genuine chills intact. While vacationing on the Yucatan Peninsula, 20-something Americans Jeff (Jonathan Tucker), Amy (Jena Malone), Eric (Shawn Ashmore), and Stacy (Laura Ramsey), befriend German traveler Mathias (Joe Anderson), who invites them to accompany him into the jungle to meet up with his archaeologist brother at an "off the map" Mayan temple. They agree, but once they arrive, angry locals shoot one of their party and refuse to allow them to leave. The Americans and Mathias retreat to the top of the temple, only to find the archaeological camp deserted. Mathias falls into the temple and is badly injured, but that is only the beginning of their troubles, as it soon becomes apparent that the vines covering the temple are alive in a way that goes beyond normal vegetation.

It may be tempting to summarize THE RUINS by saying that it's about killer plants, but that would be undermining its strong points. The latter two thirds of the film play out like a very grim five-character stage play about survival, with large servings of death and desperation, without resorting to the fake scares that many horror films use as a crutch. The gore, while often quite nasty, is also necessary to the story, which takes on a heavy psychological component as the characters begin to fear for their lives. (1 hr. 30 min.) [Movie Page]

Batman - Gotham Knight
Some of Hollywood's hottest writers lend their talents to this richly animated Batman anthology, featuring entries by David Goyer (BATMAN BEGINS), Josh Olson (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE), and Alan Burnett (BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES). With six stories in all, GOTHAM KNIGHT offers thrilling interpretations of the Caped Crusader, rendered in a style that recalls the dark and lurid lines of Japanese anime. Together, these interconnecting tales trace Batman from his early days battling evildoers in crime-plagued Gotham, to his later years as the metropolis's trusted defender. Along the way, the Dark Knight has shadowy showdowns with some of his most fearsome enemies, including Scarecrow, Killer Croc, and Dead Shot. Chock-full of explosive action sequences and bat gadgets, this continuation of the Batman saga is sure to bowl over both comic book nerds and fans of the feature films. [Movie Page]

Sleepwalking
Nick Stahl gives another outstanding performance in William Maher's engrossing SLEEPWALKING. Stahl, who has sizzled in the film IN THE BEDROOM and the HBO series CARNIVALE, plays James, a troubled young man who can't get his life in order. When his equally troubled older sister, Joleen (Charlize Theron), takes off on one of her many extended leaves--usually with some trucker who eventually casts her aside--James is left to take care of his 12-year-old niece, Tara (BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA's AnnaSophia Robb). But struggling to make money and keep his apartment, James soon finds himself sleeping on the floor of the basement of his best friend's (Woody Harrelson) house, with Tara taken away by social services. Suddenly determined not to ruin Tara's life just because his and Joleen's lives have been disasters, James busts her out of foster care and heads out on a road trip, pretending to be Tara's father as he makes his way back to the farm where all his and Joleen's problems started, under the dictatorial thumb of his father (Dennis Hopper). Screenwriter Zac Stanford (THE CHUMSCRUBBER) has created a wildly dysfunctional family made up of fascinating characters who are seemingly trapped, with no way out. Even the local cop (SIX FEET UNDER's Matthew St. Patrick) wants to help them but is continually thwarted by their inability to do the right thing or make the best decision for themselves and those around them. Shot in less than a month on a low budget, SLEEPWALKING is the directorial debut of visual-effects veteran William Maher, who has worked on several Tim Burton films, but Maher doesn't go crazy with special effects here; instead, his first film is a tender, poignant character study featuring outstanding acting and beautiful locations. Motley Crue - Carnival Of Sins LIVE
Known as much for their offstage antics as for their music, Motley Crue's reunion for the Red, White & Crue tour was met with much speculation, with everyone wondering if the group that defined the rock & roll attitude of the '80s could still deliver. At this concert held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in April of 2005, the Crue prove themselves still more than capable, playing a mixture of old favorites and new songs to a crowd of equally mixed ages. Tommy Lee performs a characteristically wild drum solo, while the rest of the show is marked by exotic dancers, pyrotechnic displays, and costumes that the group is known for. The crowd goes wild for songs like "Dr. Feelgood" and "Girls, Girls, Girls," while ballads like "Home Sweet Home" provide a much-needed break to Mick Mars, who suffers from a degenerative spinal disease. Backstage footage from the tour serves to make this a comprehensive experience of a rock legend in action. [Movie Page]
